Piperlotine C is a potent platelet-activating factor (PAF) inhibitor. PAF is a potent activator of platelets and it recruits them to sites of inflammation. The isolation of this compound was achieved by using methanolic extract from the leaves of Sarmenta leiocarpa, which contains piperlotine A and B as well as sarmentine. Piperlotine C has been shown to have potent inhibitory activity against PAF. It also inhibits arachidonic acid metabolism, which may be responsible for its antiplatelet effect.
