Description:MD-224 is a small molecule that inhibits the function of the enzyme beta-secretase (BACE1). This protein is responsible for cleaving amyloid precursor protein (APP) to form beta-amyloid peptides. The inhibition of BACE1 has been shown to decrease the production of beta-amyloid, which may be an effective therapy for Alzheimer's Disease. MD-224 also inhibits cellular processes such as DNA repair and cell division. The compound has been validated in a xenograft tumor model and leukemia cells in vitro. A fossil sequence homologous to MD-224 has been identified in endogenous yeast, suggesting that it may have a biological function.
