5-Azido-5-deoxy-D-fructose is a chiral compound that has been synthesized by the catalytic hydrogenation of 5-azido-4,6-dideoxy-D-glucose. The kinetic and stereoselective synthesis of 5-azido-5-deoxy-D-fructose is achieved by using an acetylating agent to first generate the corresponding acetic acid derivative. The enantiomeric excess in this reaction was 88%. This compound can be used as a precursor for the synthesis of polyhydroxylated compounds, such as 3,4,5,6 tetrahydroxybenzoate.
