Aloin is a natural compound that belongs to the 4-hydroxycinnamic acid family of compounds. It has been shown to induce apoptosis in neuronal cells by activating the caspase pathway. The structural analysis of aloin has shown that it contains two chiral centers, which are at the C4 and C8 positions. Aloin also inhibits the activity of dinucleotide phosphate (DNP) as well as other inhibitor molecules that inhibit apoptosis. The optimum concentration for aloin is 20 μM, while barbaloin is 100 μM. Aloin binds to kidney bean with a Langmuir adsorption isotherm constant of 0.2 nmol/g, while barbaloin binds with a constant of 0.5 nmol/g.
