2-Acetamido-2,6-dideoxy-L-mannose is a deoxyhexose that is found in lipopolysaccharides from Gram-negative bacteria. 2-Acetamido-2,6-dideoxy-L-mannose is the only hexose that can be used for O antigen synthesis, which makes it an important component of LPS and O antigens. It has been sequenced in many organisms including animals, plants, and bacteria. 2-Acetamido-2,6-dideoxy-L-mannose may be involved in the translocation of bacteria across the gut epithelium into the bloodstream. The monosaccharide also plays a role in serogrouping and serotyping of bacteria.
