Indium(III) sulfide red is a nanomaterial that has been shown to have cytotoxic effects on proximal tubule cells in the kidney. Indium(III) sulfide red is taken up by renal proximal tubular cells and accumulates there, which leads to apoptosis and cell death. The uptake of indium(III) sulfide red is due to its similarity in size with the natural substrate glucose, which can be found in the renal proximal tubule cells. This compound has been shown to cause malformations in hamsters when administered at a high dose occupationally; it also causes damage to reticuloendothelial cells and reticulum as well as an accumulation of erythrocytes.
