Lithium manganese(III,IV) oxide (LMO) is a semiconductor material that can be used in diode lasers and photoelectron microscopy. LMO is synthesized by the reaction of lithium oxide with manganese dioxide at high temperature under an inert atmosphere. The crystal structure of LMO can be described as a layered perovskite-type structure, where alternating layers of lithium ions and oxygen ions are arranged in a cubic lattice. This type of structure has been shown to promote electron emission from the material. The atomic spacing between the atoms within the layers is also important for electron emission, as well as the number of layers in each unit cell.
