It can be used in the production of polymers with anionic groups, such as polystyrene sulfonic acid and polyvinylsulfonic acid. Cyclopentenylferrocene has been shown to function as a photocurable initiator in the initiation of radical polymerization reactions. This compound has also been shown to be a good electron donor, which may be due to its ability to form stable covalent bonds with electron-deficient aromatic rings. Cyclopentenylferrocene is also able to reduce metal ions and peroxides, which may be due to its ability to transfer electrons from one organic group to another.
