Basic nickel carbonate tetrahydrate is a crystalline solid with a molecular formula of NiCO3·2H2O. It is an inorganic compound that has been used as a catalyst for the desulfurization of petroleum and natural gas. Basic nickel carbonate tetrahydrate catalyzes the removal of sulfur from hydrogen sulfide to form elemental sulfur and water. This process can be done at atmospheric pressure and room temperature in aqueous solution, which makes it an attractive alternative to other methods that require higher temperatures or pressures. Nickel carbonate can also be used to catalyze the synthesis of ruthenium nanoparticles, which are used in supercritical fluid extraction. Basic nickel carbonate tetrahydrate is soluble in organic solvents such as acetone, chloroform, alcohols, ethers, benzene, or ethyl acetate. It will precipitate out of these solvents when they are cooled or heated too quickly.
