Baicalin 7-b-D-glucuronide (BAG) is a natural compound that has been found to be an effective treatment for infectious diseases. It also can be used to treat myocardial infarct and atherosclerotic lesions, as well as neuronal death. Baicalin 7-b-D-glucuronide binds to DNA in the nucleus and inhibits the transcription of pro-apoptotic proteins through the inhibition of iron homeostasis and dNTP binding activity. This binding leads to apoptosis, or programmed cell death, which is necessary for the removal of cells that are no longer functional or needed. The mechanism of action for Baicalin 7-b-D-glucuronide has been elucidated by a model system involving rat neurons.
