Description:1-O-Benzyl-2,3-O-isopropylidene-6-O-tosyl-a-L-sorbofuranoside is a modification of the carbohydrate sialic acid. It is synthesized by the methylation and glycosylation of 1,2,3,4,6-pentaacetoxycyclohexane with 2,3,4,6-tetraacetoxybenzaldehyde in the presence of a base. The product is then converted to the corresponding 1-(1'-benzyl)-2-(2',3' or 4'-isopropylidene)-6-(1'-tosyl) derivative with sodium methoxide in methanol. This compound has been used as an intermediate for polysaccharides and sugars.
