It is an analog of sulfometuron-methyl and metolachlor, which are also used as herbicides. Chloro(chloromethanesulfonyl)methane has been shown to be toxic to ruminants, due to its ability to block the synthesis of methionine in their gut bacteria. This drug can also produce a metabolic acidosis in some animals, which may be caused by its ability to produce sulfide from sulfur-containing amino acids.
