2-(2-Bromoethyl)-2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane is a carbonyl compound that can be used to form an asymmetric epoxide from an ethylene. This product has been shown to produce isolated yields of ketones and acetals. It is a reagent for the asymmetric synthesis of alcohols and amines. 2-(2-Bromoethyl)-2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane also reacts with benzene in the presence of an acid catalyst to give a mixture of epoxides.
