Catalposide is a p-hydroxybenzoic acid derivative that has potent inducers of drug metabolism. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, which may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. Catalposide has also been shown to protect the liver from oxidative injury, thus reducing the risk of hepatic steatosis and other pathological changes associated with hepatoprotective drugs. Catalposide is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes and glucuronidases into dehydrocostus lactone, which binds specifically to markers expressed at high levels in Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains (e.g., ESX-1 secretion system protein) and inhibits cell growth in culture.
