Calystegine A5 is a natural product that belongs to the class of organic acids. It is believed to have pharmacologic properties with potential uses in the treatment of inflammatory disease. Calystegine A5 has been shown to inhibit β-glucosidase and sucrase activity in vitro and in vivo, respectively. It also inhibits β-glucosidase activity at low concentrations and exhibits antiinflammatory effects in mouse models of colitis, suggesting a possible use for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Calystegine A5 is found in plants from the family Solanaceae, including Physalis ixocarpa and Physalis peruviana, as well as other plant families such as Cactaceae, Lamiaceae, and Amaranthaceae.
