Juncusol is a natural product that has been shown to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterococcus cloacae. It also inhibits cancer cell lines in culture by inducing apoptosis. The mechanism of action for Juncusol is not fully understood but it may involve mitochondrial membrane potential and DNA synthesis inhibition. Juncusol has been shown to have high antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and fungi at low concentrations. This compound is found in plants from the family Juncaceae (e.g., Juncus effusus) and can be isolated from the roots of this plant using methanol as a solvent.
