DNQX is a fluorescent, voltage-sensitive dye that has been used in optical sensors to detect glutamate release in the extracellular space. It also blocks neurotransmission and can be used to map the thalamic circuits of rats. DNQX is a competitive antagonist of glutamate receptors that has been shown to have antidepressant effects in humans. In addition, DNQX has been shown to decrease postnatal development and may have therapeutic potential for Alzheimer's disease.
