The inhibition of glycolysis may be due to its ability to prevent the phosphorylation of glucose by hexokinase, thus blocking the conversion of glucose into glucose 6-phosphate. 3DG is biosynthesized from d-xylose, which is a five carbon sugar that can be oxidized to form CO2 and H2O.
