1,4-Dideoxy-1,4-imino-D-ribitol is a small molecule inhibitor that binds to the active site of mitochondrial DNA polymerase gamma. This drug is effective against a number of human viruses, including alphaviruses and herpes simplex virus. 1,4-Dideoxy-1,4-imino-D-ribitol has also shown to have protective effects on cultured cells from oxidative injury by inhibiting mitochondrial membrane potential. This drug has shown high binding affinity for some GTPases and may be useful as a potential target for antiviral drugs.
