Dehydroclindamycin is a semisynthetic antibiotic that belongs to the class of antibiotics known as lincosamides. It is used in clinical treatment for bacterial infections. Dehydroclindamycin acts by interfering with the bacterial ribosome and prevents the formation of proteins required for cell division. This drug may be susceptible to degradation by hydrolysis or oxidation, which can lead to impurities. Dehydroclindamycin is produced by hydrogenation of clindamycin hydrochloride using a Raney nickel catalyst, followed by chromatography. The spectrum of dehydroclindamycin consists of antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis and gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
