Description:2-Deoxy-D-ribose 5-phosphate sodium salt is a mutant of ribose 5-phosphate. It is an intermediate in the pentose phosphate pathway, which generates ribose 5-phosphate and NADPH. The 2nd step of this pathway is catalyzed by deacetylase, which converts acetaldehyde to acetyl CoA. 2-deoxy-D-ribose 5-phosphate sodium salt is also an oxidant that can react with hydrogen peroxide to form hydroxyl radicals. This intermediate has been shown to inhibit the growth of E. coli by causing mutations in the DNA and protein synthesis machinery, as well as by catalase activation.
