Leptomycin A is a potent inhibitor of cyclin-dependent kinases, which are enzymes that regulate cell division. It is an analog of the natural compound leptomycin B and has been shown to induce apoptosis in human cancer cells. Leptomycin A inhibits the export of proteins from the nucleus to the cytoplasm, leading to accumulation of tumor suppressor proteins in the nucleus. This results in inhibition of cell growth and induction of apoptosis. Leptomycin A has also been shown to have anticancer activity against Chinese hamster ovary cells and bladder tumor cells. Its ability to inhibit protein kinases makes it a promising candidate for cancer therapy.
