Gardenoside is a coumarin derivative that exhibits hypoglycemic effects. It inhibits the synthesis of glucose by binding to cell surface receptors, which is followed by the activation of adenylate cyclase and increased production of cAMP. This compound also exhibits anticancer activity in vitro and has chemoattractant properties for leukocytes and other immune cells. Gardenoside can inhibit the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids, but does not show any cytotoxic effects on cultured cells. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties in animal models.
