Purvalanol B is a kinase inhibitor that targets the apoptosis pathway. Its mechanism of action is to inhibit the production of proteins that are involved in the apoptosis pathway, such as bcl-2 protein. Purvalanol B has been shown to inhibit cancer cells by blocking the nuclear DNA response element, which inhibits transcription and replication of cancerous cells. It also inhibits the production of proinflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). This drug also works by inhibiting inhibitors of apoptosis proteins, such as bcl-2 and bax.
