Oleandrin is a natural compound that has been found to have significant cytotoxicity. Oleandrin has been shown to cause neuronal death in vitro and in vivo by acting on the matrix effect, which is the concentration of oleandrin at the site of action. It also acts as an inhibitor of protein synthesis in cardiac tissue, leading to cardiotoxicity. The chromatographic analysis of oleandrin showed that it was a mixture of three compounds with different chemical structures. The clinical pathology of oleander leaves, flowers, and seeds revealed that they contain high levels of oleandrin and related alkaloids.
