Pseudoginsenoside RT5 is a saponin that has inhibitory activities against bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. It is extracted from the roots of the red sage plant (Quinquefolium) and is used in traditional Chinese medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties. Pseudoginsenoside RT5 has shown to have potential use in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis by inhibiting collagen synthesis. The chemical composition of pseudoginsenoside RT5 was determined using chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis. It was found that pseudoginsenosides are mainly composed of ginsenosides Rg1, Rb1, Rc, Re, Rd, Rh1, and Ri. The structures were elucidated by Hplc-MS/MS method. This compound binds to the membrane of red blood cells and inhibits bacterial growth through an unknown mechanism. It also inhibits the activity of elastase enzyme which breaks down elastin
