Benzofuran-4-amine is a potent compound that binds to the PDE4 enzyme, inhibiting its activity. Benzofuran-4-amine has been shown to produce psychotropic effects in rodents and is believed to act on the central nervous system by enhancing dopamine neurotransmission. Benzofuran-4-amine also has quinoid properties, which are due to the presence of a furan ring and an amine group. The furan ring can undergo hydrolysis under alkaline conditions and produces aminoindazole and indoleamine. These compounds have not been identified in vivo or in vitro, but their presence has been confirmed through gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis. Benzofuran-4-amine yields furostifoline as a metabolite in rats.
