Salacinol (5-hydroxy-2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenoxy)benzene-1,4-diol) is a toxic compound found in the bark of the Salix species. It has shown inhibitory properties against human maltase glucoamylase and alpha-glucosidases, which are enzymes responsible for the breakdown of complex sugars. Salacinol has also been shown to be an antidiabetic agent that increases glucose uptake into cells. This may be due to its ability to inhibit glycosidic bond formation and its effects on biological processes such as protein synthesis and cell division. Salacinol can be used as a natural sugar substitute because it is not metabolized by mammals.
