Product Information
Gadolinium is a magnetic, paramagnetic metal that is used to enhance the contrast in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and has been shown to be effective in ectopic expression of gene products. Gadolinium-enhanced MRI has been shown to be a more sensitive method for detection of pancreatic cancer cells than CT scans. Gadolinium also binds to monoclonal antibodies and can be detected using immunohistochemical staining. Gadolinium is a prohormone that is converted into its active form by cleavage of the glycosidic bond between carbons 2 and 3 in the 6-phosphate position. The gadolinium ion is chemically neutral, which may account for its lack of toxicity in vivo.
