5-Thio-D-galactopyranose is a homolog of D-galactose. It is an analog of D-galactose that has been synthesized by methanolysis of 5,6-epoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline and subsequent reaction with thioglycolic acid. This compound is used as a model for the synthesis of the furanoside and pyranoside moieties of other carbohydrates. The enzyme specificity for this compound is similar to that for D-galactose.
