Product Information
UDP-N-acetyl-D-mannosamine is a precursor of the sugar nucleotide UDP-N-acetylglucosamine. It is synthesized in the cytoplasm by the enzyme UDP-N-acetylglucosamine 2-epimerase, which converts UDP-N-acetylglucosamine to UDP-N-acetylmannosamine. This enzyme also catalyzes the conversion of UDP-N-[3′,5′]-diacetamido mannosamine to UDP-[3′,5′]-diacetamido glucuronic acid. The enzyme has been found in Streptococcus spp., including Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus pyogenes serogroup A (group A streptococci). It has also been detected in other bacteria, including Neisseria meningitidis and Staphylococcus aureus.
