Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin that is found in animal products. It is required for the production of red blood cells and DNA, as well as for the maintenance of a healthy nervous system. Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to a number of health problems, including anemia, nerve damage, and bowel disease. A diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency typically involves measuring serum vitamin B12 levels. If the level is low or deficient, other tests may be performed to determine whether there are any underlying causes for this deficiency. Deficiencies in vitamin B12 can be caused by pernicious anemia, dietary restrictions (veganism), or certain medications. A low-dose group study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of high dose oral cobalamin on reducing homocysteine levels in patients with bowel disease. The experimental model consisted of 34 patients with bowel disease who were randomly assigned to either receive 500 μg oral cobalamin daily or placebo for 3 months. Results show
