Alpha-naphthoflavone is a naturally occurring flavonoid that is used as an inhibitor of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes. It has been shown to interfere with the metabolism of other drugs by inhibiting CYP activity, which may lead to drug interactions. Alpha-naphthoflavone has also been shown to inhibit skin tumor formation in mice. In vitro studies have shown that alpha-naphthoflavone inhibits the activities of CYP3A4 and CYP2D6 enzymes. The enzyme induction properties of alpha-naphthoflavone have also been studied in human hepatocytes, rat liver microsomes, and yeast cells. Alpha-Naphthoflavone has been shown to stimulate the response element in vitro, which may be due to its ability to bind DNA and alter gene expression patterns.
