Nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) is an antioxidant that has clinical and physiological properties. It has been shown to inhibit the production of epidermal growth factor, which may be due to its inhibition of tyrosinase activity. NDGA also inhibits tumor cell proliferation and induces apoptosis in vitro. This compound is a potent inhibitor of HIV-1 protease, which blocks viral replication, and also inhibits viral entry into host cells. In vivo studies indicate that NDGA does not cause toxicity or cytotoxicity in rats at doses up to 1 g/kg.
