2-Aminoadenosine is a nucleoside analog that is used as a substrate for the enzyme adenosine deaminase. 2-Aminoadenosine inhibits the growth of certain cancer cells by inhibiting the activity of DNA polymerase and RNA polymerase, which are necessary for DNA and RNA synthesis, respectively. 2-Aminoadenosine has been shown to be effective against some types of cancer cells in vitro, but not in vivo. It also has some anticancer activity in vivo. The mechanism of action of 2-aminoadenosine is not well understood; it may inhibit ribonucleotide reductase or interfere with cell division by altering the conformation of DNA duplexes.
