3'-Amino-3'-deoxyadenosine (3AD) is a nucleoside that has been used in the treatment of ascites, which is an accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity. 3AD inhibits protein synthesis by binding to and inhibiting adenosine receptors. The adenosine receptor is a G protein-coupled receptor for adenosine. It has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on protein synthesis, as well as cell culture and polymer film formation. 3AD also binds to chloride ions, forming a coordination complex with the hydroxyl group. Molecular modeling studies have shown that this complex forms a hydrogen bond with the phosphate group of ATP, which may inhibit ATP hydrolysis and lead to decreased enzyme activity.
