Product Information
- 2-Azido-D-adenosine
- Adenosine, 2-Azido-
2-Azidoadenosine is used to prevent the effects of glutamate, a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. It is an analog of adenosine and inhibits ATP sensitive potassium channels and ryanodine receptors. 2-Azidoadenosine irreversibly inhibits glutamate dehydrogenase, which converts glutamate to α-ketoglutarate and ammonia. The enzyme form of 2-azidoadenosine binds to subunits of glutamate dehydrogenase in the active site and blocks the conversion of substrate to product. This drug also has a neutral pH, which allows it to be administered intravenously without causing tissue damage. 2-Azidoadenosine is a natural compound that can be found in human liver tissue, as well as other natural sources such as plant material.
