In addition, it is a precursor for the synthesis of purines. 5'-O-Acetyladenosine can be synthesized from trimethyl phosphate and chloride gas yields acetaldehyde, which then reacts with phosphorus oxychloride to form 5'-O-acetyladeninol, which undergoes hydrolysis to yield 5'-O-acetyladenosine. The regioselectivity of this reaction depends on the concentration of reactants and solvents used in the reaction.
