This active compound has been shown to be an activator of ribonucleotide reductases, which are enzymes that catalyze the conversion of ribonucleotides to deoxyribonucleotides. 3'-b-Azido-2',3'-dideoxy-5'-O-DMT-uridine is not cytotoxic at concentrations up to 40 mM, and it has been shown to inhibit replication of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV) in tissue culture.
