1-b-D-arabinofuranosyluracil 5'-monophosphate (Ara5p) is a purine nucleoside that is found in the fatty acid fraction of human erythrocytes. Ara5p is also expressed at high levels in human lymphoblasts and leukemia cells. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vitro and in vivo by inhibiting the transport of purines across cell membranes, which leads to a decrease in the production of DNA and RNA. Ara5p inhibits deaminase activity, leading to an increase in the synthesis of anti-tumor amino acids. This drug also inhibits phosphorylation, which may be due to its ability to inhibit phospholipases A2.
