2,4-Dichlorobenzotrichloride is a chlorobenzoyl compound that can be produced by the reaction of benzoyl chloride with chlorine. It is used as a precursor to 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid, which is an intermediate in the synthesis of phenoxy herbicides and insecticides. 2,4-Dichlorobenzotrichloride can be synthesized by irradiation of chlorobenzene or benzene in the presence of carbon tetrachloride and chlorine. Recycling 2,4-dichlorobenzotrichloride may cause environmental contamination due to its acidic properties.
2,4-Dichlorobenzotrichloride has shown to have strong radiation resistance and high yields when exposed to gamma radiation and electron beams.
