3,4-Dichlorobenzotrichloride is a colorant that belongs to the class of organic chlorine compounds. It has been used as a pigment in plastics and paints. This compound is typically prepared by the reaction of hydrogen chloride with 3,4-dichloro-benzoyl chloride. The product is an isomeric mixture of two types of compounds: those containing chlorine at the 1 and 2 positions (3,4-dichlorobenzotrichloride) and those containing chlorine at the 2 and 3 positions (2,3-dichlorobenzotrichloride). The former type usually has a higher melting point than the latter type. The colorless compound decomposes when heated or exposed to light, yielding hydrogen chloride and hydrochloric acid. It can also react with water to form hydrofluoric acid and hydrogen chloride gas.
