2-Methoxy-2-phenylacetonitrile (2MP) is an organic solvent that is used in the synthesis of pharmaceutical drugs. It has a low toxicity and low flammability. 2MP has been shown to have cardiovascular protective effects by protecting against myocardial infarction and stroke. The mechanism of this protection is not well understood, but it may be due to its ability to deactivate reactive oxygen species or inhibit platelet aggregation. This chemical also has optical properties that allow it to be used as a fluorescent probe for metal ions, such as sodium periodate.
