The oxidation of 6-chloro-2,2'-bipyridine and chloride ion yields 6-chloro-2,4,4'-trimethylpyridine and hydrogen ion. The emission spectrum of this compound has a strong peak at 514 nm when it is excited with light at 365 nm. This peak can be used to identify the presence of hydrochloric acid.
