The endophytic fungus Phoma talaromyces produces the compound 4-hydroxyisobenzofuran-1(3H)-one. This compound is a phthalide with a hydroxyl group in the C4 position, which is found in plants and fungi. The activity of 4-hydroxyisobenzofuran-1(3H)-one has been studied using a high performance liquid chromatography assay against tripterygium and ferulic acid as reference compounds. 4-Hydroxyisobenzofuran-1(3H)-one inhibits the enzyme monoamine oxidase, which is involved in the metabolism of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin.
