Terbium fluoride is a luminescent material that emits light when excited by an electron beam. It can be used to study the structure of carboxylic acids, and has been shown to have a strong fluorescence emission at 647 nm in benzoic acid. Terbium fluoride nanoparticles are also capable of emitting light under UV excitation, with a peak wavelength of 405 nm. This material is often used in electron microscopy as it has been shown to produce bright images of carboxylic acids. Terbium(III) fluoride reacts with salicylic acid, acetylsalicylic acid and citric acid, forming terbium(III) salts which are soluble in water.
