Description:2,3-Dimethyl-6-nitro-1H-indole is a formamide that is found in the chromic acid oxidation of indole. It was first synthesized by R. B. Woodward in 1940 and has been used as a reagent for the synthesis of various indoles. 2,3-Dimethyl-6-nitro-1H-indole can be synthesized by reacting formaldehyde with nitroethane in aqueous solution at pH 9 and then adding an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide. The product precipitates as a crystalline solid that can be filtered off and purified by recrystallization from water or ethanol.
