Description:
2'-Bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) is a pyrimidine nucleoside that can be used as a marker for cell proliferation. It is taken up by cells, where it is converted to the active form, BrdUrd. The protonated form of BrdUrd is able to cross cell membranes and enter into the nucleus, where it is incorporated into DNA and RNA. In this way, BrdUrd can be used to determine the rate at which new cells are being produced in tissues and organs.
