It is synthesized by the enzymatic oxidation of 2'-deoxyadenosine with benzoyl chloride and sodium bicarbonate. N4-Benzoyl-2'-deoxy-a-cytidine has been shown to activate transcription, increase DNA synthesis, and inhibit virus replication. It also inhibits bacterial growth, but does not appear to have any effect on mammalian cells.
