It inhibits the synthesis of viral DNA by competitive inhibition of thymidine kinase, which is an enzyme necessary for the conversion of deoxyribonucleotides to their monophosphate form. 2-Benzylthio-6-chloropurine has been found to be effective against herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 (HSV1 and HSV2). The drug is also active against HIV, influenza A virus, and cytomegalovirus.
